As a radiation oncologist, I’m responsible for determining the role of radiation therapy in a patient’s cancer treatment plan, planning the radiation treatment, evaluating the patient for the response to the treatment, and continuing to follow-up with the patient for side effect management and cancer surveillance.

At the first visit, also known as a consultation, I review all of the patient’s records, pathology reports, laboratory results and imaging and perform a physical examination.  At the conclusion of the exam, I discuss my recommendations for radiation treatment with the patient and family.  Several appointments are made for the patient so that a plan for the radiation treatment can be developed.

Once treatment starts, I make sure that every treatment is accurately given, monitor the patient’s progress and adjust treatment as necessary, and treat any side effects of radiation therapy

Assistant Clinical Professor | Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center

As an assistant clinical professor, I teach residents all the above listed responsibilities of a radiation oncologist so that they can eventually practice independently. I’m responsible for student advisement, mentoring, monitoring performance, providing feedback, and providing them with opportunities for growth in their careers.

Prior experience: I don’t believe this applies to my field/me as this is my first official job after training. I’m happy to provide details on other jobs I’ve performed on the side (tutor, receptionist, etc)while undergoing my training if that would be helpful or with details on my research, volunteer work, memberships if that’s what you’re looking for. 

Education:

To become a radiation oncologist, I have completed four years of college, four years of medical school, one year of general medical training, and then four years of residency training in radiation oncology. At each stage, I’ve taken multiple exams in order to qualify proceeding to the next step in training with the last exam being a board certification by the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Julie Shah

Dr. Julie Shah works as a Quality and Training Consultant at Total Quality Concepts, Inc.
Totally Quality Concepts sets up and maintains quality management systems for small to mid-size aerospace and medical device companies.
Prior to joining Total Quality Concepts, Dr. Shah was an educator for 15 years. Dr. Shah was in the classroom for 10 years and served as an instructional coach for 5 years. In addition, she also taught courses in the teacher credential program at Chapman University. Dr. Shah says, “I am passionate about education; it can truly change the trajectory of a child’s life. I left teaching so that I could be a better mom.”

Dr. Julie Shah graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2002 attaining her Bachelor’s degree. She then did her Master of Social Work from California State University in 2005 and then pursued her PhD degree to become a Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California in 2013.

Dr. Reshma Shah brings with her a wealth of experience in the field of education. Dr. Reshma is a Professor of Marketing at Goizueta Business School, Emory University, and has been teaching there for 26 years. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, received her MBA at the University of Southern California, and then went on to pursue her doctorate degree, receiving her Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh.

Mamta Shah

Mamta Shah graduated from the accelerated Medical Program at Boston University in 2009. Mamta currently works is MD and works as an Oculoplastic Surgeon at CareMount Medical Center in New York City. She did her research at Massachusetts Eye & Ear and is currently working on a research piece about Aesthetics in Women of Color.
